Patar Beach is Bolinao’s main attraction, the star of the show, a gem of find in the northern part of Pangasinan. The best part about this long and wide stretch of a beautiful shoreline is that aside from being sun-kissed free, there are loads to do around the beach that’s fun and budget-friendly.
Bolinao is located in the northern part of Pangasinan, about 6 hours drive from Manila and an hour drive from the provincial capital of Alaminos.
From Manila, there are a number of buses that ply the Manila-Bolinao-Manila route directly. These buses offer comfortable seating, helpful and accommodating bus conductors and free wifi onboard. Just mention Bolinao and they know you’re headed for Patar beach.
Bus companies that ply Manila-Bolinao-Manila
No need to worry about advance booking or buying tickets online. Most of the bus companys’ Cubao and Pasay terminals sell tickets on board and bus departs for Bolinao almost every hour. Bus fare is around PHP400.00 per head. Night buses are also available.
Upon arrival at Bolinao terminal, you will be greeted with a crowd of tricycle drivers offering their services for day tours. Just let them know you need to go to Patar Beach and practice your bargaining skills. The fare is around PHP100.00 per head. Patar Beach is a long drive, about 20-30 minutes from the bus terminal.
Budget Friendly Things to do at Patar Beach (some free!)
The best news here is that if you do not have any need for parking or cottage rental, your entrance is free! Arm yourself with bottled water, sunblock, beach mat and book and basically your beach day is complete.
You can bargain with your tricycle driver to wait for you at the beach gate entrance at a designated hour. For an additional charge, you can also ask your handsome driver to bring you to the Bolinao Lighthouse which is just around 300 meters from the beach gate entrance.
- Island Hopping
- Visit the Bolinao Lighthouse
- Cliff Jumping
- Savour the local Binungey
- Souvenir Shopping
For the island hopping, approach any banca operator-driver to ask for their tours. The banca tour will bring you to the other side of Patar Beach, to see the rock formations, enjoy cliff jumping and the breath-taking view of the rocky shoreline. The boat tour is PHP200.00 per head and maximum of 6 persons is grouped per banca ride.
If you do get hungry both for food or for souvenir shopping, the beach entrance is lined with food stalls and shop houses. Savour the local delicacy of Bolinao, the binungey, for only PHP50.00. It is rice cake that is steamed inside a bamboo pipe and you can spoon it off with an ingenious bamboo spoon.
For your safety, always keep an eye your belongings, and be alert for bad elements. Patar Beach is a public beach and offers free entrance so security is lax and because of the beach-holiday ambience, safety and security is mostly shoved in the back of beachgoers’ mind.
